Amethyst has been dated back all the way to 2000 BC. Ancient Egyptians used the stone in prayer and in their amulets, to protect them. In Greek mythology Amethyst inherited its purple color from the tears of Dionysus (god of wine and revelry). Amethyst is also mentioned in the Old Testament as one of the 12 stones associated with the tribes of Israel.
